This Winter has been brutal! But Michigan is thawing out and the past weeks has been busy but exciting as hay and shaving supplies are coming in and everything is getting ready for horses coming in April to the JBH Center! The Center used to be a boarding stable and was closed for three years, there's a lot to clean and touch up, but it will be beautiful this summer. Can't wait to start taking photos and video of the new facility for you all!

3 Things to do with your horse during the Winter Blahs!

Posted by Jordanbrasserhorsemanship on February 26, 2013 at 8:25 PM Comments comments (0)

Feeling the winter blahs? There’s more to do with your horse than riding if you’re stuck indoors! Here are 3 simple things you can work on with your horse in the winter months that are fun and interesting...

Despooking:

You can see examples of how to desensitize your horse to a tarp on youtube by searching for“Jordan brasser tarp training”. Remember to always allow your horse to demonstrate“curiousity” when introducing new things and he will discover on his own that they are not scary! Point Training In a small area, pick a subject and walk your horse to it. Give him a long rope and move your training stick in a small circle and stop as soon as your horse starts to look around. Continue this until he touches the thing that you were thinking of, praise your horse and try something different to touch. Soon he will start looking for what you want him to touch next! Chill Time Horses in a herd often spend time with each other just grooming and doing not much of anything. Use this down time to relax and enjoy the presence of your horse! There will be plenty to do when Spring comes!

The Concept of doing Nothing.

In this world we live in, it is common for us to feel guilty for doing nothing. Why do we do this? Look at the horse. In a horse herd, there are two things that horses spend time doing: Time together doing something... and time together doing nothing. Take some time today to stand beside your horse while he eats or hangs out in the pasture. Fondle his hair, listen to the sounds around you and explore what he is exploring.

This time spend doing nothing with your horse will revitalize you, remind your horse that he can relax and strengthen the bond you have with eachother... and with all these snowdays, it's a perfect time to do it!
